This is a socio-managerial role in the climate department at KAYA head office. The responsible colleague will lead and manage the social engagement, community mobilisation and livelihood generation program in the organisation. The work will involve ensuring the adherence of projects, through their lifecycle, to the framework and guidelines set forth by various certification standards. The Community & Livelihoods Specialist will work closely with the scientific staff in the Head Office and the Community & Livelihoods Managers in the Country Offices. Periodic travel to project sites for monitoring and evaluation will be an integral part of this role.

Tasks

  • Ensure adherence in our project development efforts to high standards of community engagement as per international human and labour rights
  • Govern the development and execution of community engagement methods in our project activities like the participatory appraisal, focus group discussion, and free, prior and informed consent
  • Direct the micro-enterprise development processes & best practices
  • Ensure adherence of project development and implementation for achieving international social certifications in projects
  • Coordinate the certification standard-mandated third-party validation and verification process in the projects under development
  • Be the organisation’s focal point to Social Accountability International, Verra’s CCB Standard, Gold Standard and Social Carbon, and track developments there
  • Build and run an effective project-portfolio-wide monitoring, evaluation and learning program
  • Disseminate information on community engagement and livelihoods practices across different KAYA Country Offices
  • Train Community & Livelihoods Managers in the organisation and build their capacity in ensuring high standards in social engagement

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of several of the following standards: SAI’s SA 8000, IFC’s ESS Performance Standard, Verra’s CCB Standard, Gold Standard, and Social Carbon
  • Deep knowledge of international human and labour rights as per frameworks from agencies such as the International Labour Organization and the World Bank Group
  • Over five years of experience in social engagement and livelihoods generation projects with the potential to show samples of work done
  • Field work experience in sub-Saharan Africa is desirable
  • Willingness to live and work in Berlin
  • Willingness to travel overseas for work, especially to sub–Saharan Africa
  • Openness to co-creating structures, processes and culture at a start-up while being patient through the developmental phase
  • Possibility to contact former employers as references
  • In addition to English fluency, languages desired are French, Portuguese, and/or Spanish
  • Education in development studies, social science, or rural development is desirable
