Stellenbeschreibung

Doctoral Student (f/m/d) in Accelerator Physics – Processing of
superconducting RF Cavities

Reference No.: BE 2024/19

The Institute for Science and Technology of Accelerating Systems at HZB
researches, designs, constructs and operates novel cavity systems for modern
particle accelerators. These involve not only the cavities themselves,
the optimization of their design or the materials they are made of, but all the
auxiliary systems that are essential for operation in the accelerator.

The work of the research group for Accelerating Structures involves the entire
process, from electromagnetic (EM) software design to mechanical engineering,
fabrication and prototype testing. Our main emphasis is on practical
applications, especially of SRF cavities.
As a PhD student at HZB, you will support us in our research in the field of
SRF cavities and the explore methods to improve the cavity performance in
operational modules. In close cooperation with a highly motivated team, you
will face challenging tasks and develop processing methods to be applied at SRF
accelerators worldwide.

Your Tasks

* Review and investigate novel processing methods for superconducting
cavities from various materials.
* Explore experimental setups for in-situ heat treatments of SRF cavities
* Commissioning of an RF setup for cavity processing under gas (plasma
processing)
* In-depth characterization of the cavity surface layers
* Understanding the impact of the treatments on the material surface layer,
especially the distribution of impurities inside the material introduced by the
treatments
* Analysis of the applicability of the processing methods to existing
accelerator modules
* Maintaining relations to other SRF accelerator groups to ensure wide-range
applicability
* Presentation and publication of the obtained results at international
accelerator conferences
Your Profile

* Fulfillment of the criteria for PhD candidates at the Technische
Universität Dortmund, MSc in physics or comparable degree from a
university or technical university (
https://physik.tu-dortmund.de/studium/studiengaenge-und-qualifikation/promotion/

of the Technische Universität Dortmund)
* Interest in RF technology and in accelerator physics
* Practical experience either with RF equipment e.g., network analyzers, or
material surface analysis is beneficial
* Readiness to expand knowledge towards RF measurements and material
characterization methods
* Good command of English
Your Benefits

* Contribution to Innovation: Work with researchers from around the world on
projects that drive renewable energy and advanced technologies.
* Commitment to diversity: sustainability through an inclusive working
environment,promotion of diversity sensitivity

andimplementation of sustainable and climate-neutral methods

.
* Career-enhancing networking opportunities: individual mentoring and
support from the HZB Graduate Centre

and HZB Postdoc Office

.
* Attractive remuneration through payment according the Collective Wage
Agreement for the Civil Service TVöD Bund.
* Flexible Working Conditions: Enjoy a 39-hour work week, 30 days of
vacation, and the possibility to work remotely up to three days per week.
* Extensive additional benefits: a company pension plan (VBL), subsidy for
public transport (Deutschlandticket Job) and company sports programmes.
* Work-Life Balance: Access comprehensive advisory services to balance work
and personal life, plus participate in company sports and wellness programs.
* Team Spirit: Be part of a welcoming and supportive team.
Fixed term contract for 48 months. The salary is based on the Collective
Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund).

How to apply

We look forward to receiving your application via our application management
system by03.11.2024. For reasons of data protection regulations, we are
unfortunately unable to consider applications that reach us by other means
(such as email or mail) in the application process.

We very much want our workplace to be diverse, and welcome applications from
people with different backgrounds. It is our mission to promote equal
opportunities and to improve women’s representation in the workforce. We
are therefore very interested in receiving applications from women. Where the
qualifications are met, we will give preference to people with disabilities.
