As a science brand, we are best known for our distinctive animated videos and our elaborate products around the kurzgesagt theme worlds. Through our globally successful YouTube channel with over 25 million subscribers, we aim to inspire people around the world about science and make knowledge accessible and exciting. We believe that well-researched facts are just as important as humor and good storytelling. Nothing in the universe is boring if you tell a good story.

We are looking for support as:

Freelance Senior Storyboard Artist (all genders)

Location: Germany

This role will start as a freelance engagement. If, after an initial period, the collaboration proves to be a good fit for both sides and you are based in Germany, we would be happy to explore transitioning the role into a permanent position.

How to make an impact - in a nutshell

• Translate complex scientific scripts into clear and engaging storyboards
• Develop the visual tone of the videos (determining the flow, rhythm, and visual story) with the goal of making a wide range of scientific topics accessible for millions of people
• Take ownership of and sketch entire storyboards independently
• Illustrate styleframes and put together moodboards to set the artistic direction of a video in coordination with a Creative Director
• Collaborate with subject matter experts to maintain scientific accuracy

What you are best known for

• 4+ years of experience working as an illustrator and/or storyboard artist for animation (experience in science communication is a plus)
• A keen sense of style and know how to create accurate and entertaining illustrations for a wide range of topics
• Flexibility and adaptability - you understand the core of our visual identity and can combine this with your own style and artistic sensibilities
• Comfortable with handling cinematic or character-heavy scenes as well as infographics
• Working fast while maintaining clarity in your sketches and storyboards to ensure others can work with them without further guidance
• Expertly using a wide range of stylistic devices to smoothly guide viewers through a video while accurately representing the content of the script
• Working independently while collaborating effectively with other project stakeholders
• A strong ability to read, comprehend, and visually interpret scientific texts and are eager to immerse yourself even in topics you aren’t familiar with
• Excellent written and spoken English skills (good German skills are nice to have)
